Lingerie is a term coined for very fashionable and even possibly alluring undergarments. When the term is used in French (it will mean that the word applies to all clothes you wear under your normal clothes for either gender. In the English language it is specifically applied to the undergarments that were designed to be very visually appealing or some might say erotic. Lingerie usually incorporates one or more flexible, elastic materials like Lycra, nylon (nylon tricot), polyester, satin, lace, silk and sheer fabric which are not really typically used in more functional, and very basic cotton undergarments. The invented concept of lingerie was to be a visually appealing undergarment that was developed during and around the nineteenth century. Lady Duff-Gordon of Lucile was a pioneer in developing a better form of lingerie that freed women from all the other restrictive corsets. During the first half of the 20th century, there were many women who wore underwear for three main reasons: one is to alter their womanly shape (first when they used corsets and later with girdles or bras), for hygienic reasons, or for modesty. Before the invention of crinoline, women’s underwear was often very thick and uncomfortable. During the late 19th century, new corsets became much smaller, and less bulky and also constricting, and were gradually supplanted by the brassiere, that was first patented in the 20th century by Mary Phelps Jacob. When the First World War started, women found themselves filling in men’s work roles a lot more often, which really created a demand for more practical undergarments. Manufacturers had begun to use lighter and more breathable fabrics for the comfort of women. When the 20th century progressed, underwear had become smaller and more form fitting the women’s shape. In the 1960s, when lingerie manufacturers such as Frederick’s of Hollywood began to glamorize lingerie it got even more popular The lingerie industry expanded into the 21st century with designs that always doubled as outerwear. The French refer to this as ‘dessous-dessus’ which basically means innerwear as outerwear.

This year’s manufactures are all high end companies that put out professional lingerie that can usually be particularly expensive. Fleur of England has a nice silk and lace piece this year. ID Sarrier has a bra that also doubles as lingerie.
